Teaching Ideas for Music Alphabet Tiles

There are many ways you can use the Music Alphabet Tiles to teach your music students. Here are just a few ideas:

  • The music alphabet (help student put the music alphabet in order – then add another set so they can see how it repeats)
  • Spelling game (have the student spell words using the music alphabet tiles then play the notes on the piano or, for more advanced students, transcribe the notes on the staff)
  • Scale building (combine with finger number tiles for scale fingering)
  • Chord building (easily teach major, minor, diminished, and augmented chords by replacing the 3rd and 5th of the chord with the accidentals or naturals needed)
  • Intervals (start with basic intervals then add accidental tiles to teach different intervallic qualities)
  • Note reading (have a student struggling to remember the notes on their music page? Have them line up the Music Alphabet Tiles on the music stand under the notes they’re reading. Remove one tile at a time so they will learn to read music without assistance)

You can also combine the Sight Reading Note Tiles for even more music teaching ideas!

  • Make sight-reading fun by lining up Sight-Reading Note Tiles and having the student lay out the Music Alphabet Tiles to name the pitches
  • For students struggling with accidentals, you can use the Accidental Music Tiles with the Music Alphabet Tiles
  • Help students with finger number patterns by combining the Music Alphabet Tiles and Finger Number Tiles
  • Teach notes on the staff by combining just 2-3 Music Alphabet Tiles and Sight-Reading Note Tiles

You and your students are sure to find dozens of ways to use Music Alphabet Tiles in your studio!
