Your students will enjoy putting together rhythm with this Rhythm House! It will help students easily visualize rhythms in 4/4 time as well as teach basic note values. Each horizontal row in the Rhythm House represents one full, 4-beat measure, providing many rhythm opportunities for your students’ learning.

How to Use the Rhythm House in your Teaching

This rhythm house has 20 pieces to teach rhythm for students at the lower levels. It includes basic note values that kids can clap through and also have an option to “build” the rhythm house. 

Teachers can use the different “rooms” to demonstrate beats. For example, the whole note gets four rooms, half note two rooms, quarter note gets one room, etc. This makes a good visual for demonstrating subdivisions. Your students can easily see that two rooms (beats) can be filled by one half note, two quarter notes, or four eighth notes.

You can also explain to students that when there is a “blank” room (e.g. the whole note then three blank spaces or rooms), they are to hold the note rather than clap again. It provides another visual for the student to easily see and apply to rhythm.

You can create various one-measure rhythm patterns for each “level” in this rhythm house by using the provided whole notes, dotted half notes, half notes, quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes. Your students can progress in their knowledge with starting with easier notes (whole notes to quarter notes), vary their rhythm pattern with quarter rests, and finally advance to eighth notes and sixteenth notes.
