Music Staff Puzzle Ideas

This versatile music staff puzzle can be used from your very beginning music students to intermediate students who need a review.

Ideas for beginning students:

• Teach them the different clefs by asking them to place a specific clef on the puzzle (e.g. “Put the bass clef on the puzzle”)

• Teach them the lines and space numbers by lining up all of the numbers in the correct place. Have the student point to each number and say it (e.g. “Line 1, line 2, line 3, etc.”). Then, remove just one number and have the student point to all of the numbers and name them – both the ones that have numbers and ones that are blank.

• Give the student the blank board and number pieces and have the student race to see how quickly they can number the lines and spaces. Track their time week to week for improvement.

• Mix up the numbers on the board and have the student put all of the numbers in the correct places.

Ideas for late beginner to intermediate students:

• Teach the lines and spaces mnemonically by lining up the letters and teaching a saying.

• Teach the lines and spaces by having the student memorize just the letters. Place the bottom line letter puzzle piece and have the student name it. Then add the second and have the student name both. Keep adding one letter until all of the lines or spaces are filled.

• Place just a few letter puzzle pieces on the board and have the student fill in the missing letters.

• Give the student the blank board and music alphabet pieces and have the student race to see how quickly they can correctly put the letters in the lines and spaces. Track their time week to week for improvement.

• Mix up the letters on the board and have the student put all of the letters in the correct places.

• Line up just the letters and the student must pick the correct clef that belongs with those notes.
